Rugged Obsidian 9

Quick Take

Rugged’s Obsidian 9 is a modular 9mm can built around the ADAPT system, letting you swap between short, carry-friendly length and a full-length configuration for maximum suppression. It uses a booster/piston system for locked-breech pistols, supports popular thread pitches, and accepts a 3-lug mount for PCCs.

Rugged Obsidian 9

Introduction

The Rugged Obsidian 9 is a modular 9 mm pistol suppressor that combines excellent sound reduction, smart ergonomics, and true long-term serviceability. It’s a can you can configure for the day’s job—quiet in full length, or compact in K—without giving up reliability or ease of maintenance.

Design & Build Quality

The tube is hard-coat anodized aluminum for weight savings, while the baffles and mount are 17-4 stainless steel for durability and easy cleaning. Baffles interlock to form an internal gas seal, limiting fouling between the stack and tube. The front cap is replaceable, and the piston doubles as a front-cap tool. Engraving is on the thickest cross-section of the 17-4 mount so, if the tube is ever damaged beyond repair, factory service can replace components without losing the serialized core—keeping the suppressor upgradeable over time.

Compatibility & Mounting

The Obsidian 9 is fully compatible with Obsidian 45 accessories—pistons, fixed mounts, fixed-barrel spacers, and tri-lug mounts. This makes it easy to move between handguns and PCC/subgun hosts:

  • Handguns: piston/Nielsen device for proper cycling
  • PCC/Subgun: fixed-barrel spacer or true tri-lug for quick on/off

Caliber Ratings

  • Belt-fed rated for pistol calibers up to 9 mm
  • 300 BLK subsonic (8" barrel or longer)
  • 9×39 subsonic (8" barrel or longer)
  • 350 Legend (16" barrel or longer)
  • 357 Magnum (12" barrel or longer)
  • 38 SPL (12" barrel or longer)
  • 30-30 subsonic (8" barrel or longer)

Performance

Testing on a Beretta M9 with Fiocchi 9 mm 147 gr FMJ produced the following:

ML (Muzzle) 137.3 dB−25.9 dB)
SE (Shooter’s Ear)133.0 dB−22.5 dB)

In K length we measured:
ML (Muzzle)149.3 dB−13.9 dB)

Translation: Full length gives a deep, comfortable tone for extended sessions; K is still very usable with subs and many factory 115–147 gr loads when you want a shorter, lighter setup. A ~20–26 dB reduction at the muzzle/ear is a dramatic real-world change; even the K mode’s ~14 dB delta is a meaningful drop with a clear improvement in shootability.

Tone, Gas & Shootability

The Obsidian 9’s tone is smooth and non-harsh. Back-pressure is well managed on common tilting-barrel pistols, and the system stays consistent across hosts when you use the correct mounts (piston vs. fixed spacer vs. tri-lug). POI shift is predictable and repeatable when properly torqued.

Maintenance Made Simple

  • Disassemble on a reasonable schedule; carbon and lead are easier to manage before parts seize.
  • Ultrasonic cleaners are fine for the stainless baffles; avoid harsh steel-only dips on the aluminum tube/caps.
  • Use light anti-seize on threads, keep O-rings healthy, and verify alignment after any mount change.

Pros

  • Excellent suppression in Full; genuinely useful K length
  • ADAPT modularity—tool-free length change
  • Wide accessory ecosystem (shared with Obsidian 45)
  • User-serviceable 17-4 stack; easy long-term ownership
  • Belt-fed pistol rating; generous caliber coverage

Cons

  • Heavier than micro cans and wider than 1.05" “micro” options
  • K trades away noticeable dB (expected with the shorter module)

Who It’s For

Shooters who want one 9 mm can to cover everything—home-defense pistols, training pistols, and PCCs—without juggling multiple models. Run it Full for the quietest tone; switch to K for compact drills or when weight matters.

Measured Summary & Score

  • Measured (Full): ML 137.3 (Δ −25.9) · SE 133.0 (Δ −22.5)
  • Measured (K): ML 149.3 (Δ −13.9)
  • Overall Rating — Yowie Score: PS-83.7

Conclusion

The Rugged Obsidian 9 is a benchmark modular pistol suppressor: deep, comfortable tone in Full, practical results in K, and the mounts, parts, and serviceability that make ownership easy for years. If you want a single 9 mm can that’s just as happy on a handgun as it is on a PCC, this is it.
