Update Caliber or configuration of Short Barrel Rifle

You can lawfully amend your approved form 1 or form4 (Tax Stamp) to include multiple configurations.

To update the caliber or configuration of a Short-Barreled Rifle (SBR) registered with the ATF, you need to notify the ATF in writing.  Here's how you can do this:

1. Prepare a Letter:  Write a letter to the ATF detailing that you want to amend the configuration of the SBR.  Include the new caliber, barrel length, and overall length.  Be sure to include your full name, address, and the make, model, and serial number of the firearm.  Most ATF processors require what is called a “wet” signature, it is best to sign this letter in Ink.

2. Details to Include:  Specify the new configuration without replacing the existing one.  For instance, you can request to add new configurations rather than replacing the old one.  This helps ensure that your SBR can be legally configured in multiple ways.  Avoid including cartridge, length or details (e.g., 45 ACP or 5.56x45); just specify the bullet caliber (e.g., 30, 5.56 mm).  Some ATF examiners may reject approval if it includes the length or other details of the cartridge.

3. Send the Letter: Mail the letter to the ATF's National Firearms Act Branch at the following address:

4. Documentation:  Keep a copy of the letter for your records.  It is likely you may not receive an acknowledgment from the ATF.  Having documentation can be useful if your configuration is ever questioned.  Keep these together with your approved form, Trust, etc.

5. No Specific Form Required:  According to the ATF's instructions, there is no specific form for changing the description of an SBR.  Just ensure you follow the process described above and notify them in writing.

 By following these steps, you can update the configuration of your SBR to include different calibers or other specifications legally.

Be sure to fill in the brackets with your specific information and review the letter to ensure accuracy before sending it to the ATF.  I recommend using the same information in your ATF e-forms account if you have one.  Match the information on the approved (Tax Stamped) form.  Include your phone number, or email address, or both.
